Snowshoe

Sprint your way through the snow and lunge across the finish line. Runners must strike a delicate balance between speed and light-footedness as they move quickly through the snow without breaking the hard surface. Special racing snowshoes disperse the runner’s weight evenly, and feature spikes under the foot holds so runners can launch forward at the start gun and sprint toward the finish. Snowshoeing consists of four separate events:100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter dash, and the 5k.

The Empire State Games 5K will comply with the rules outlined by the USSSA, which can be found here.

Distance Event — 5K

The 5K cross country snowshoe race will be a mass start and follow a challenging but fair course through wooded terrain. There will likely be some single track as well as groomed surfaces. The course will be well marked with cones and pin flags. The start and finish will be near the Paul Smith’s College VIC’s main lodge.

Sprint Snowshow Racing

The 2018 edition of the Empire State Winter Games will feature three distances to be run on a four-lane, 300 meter oval track at the Paul Smith’s College soccer field. The field is located just off of Route 86, approximately a quarter mile from the main campus.

The 100, 400, and 800-meter events will all be competed as timed finals, generally by age group. All attempts will be made to place the competitors with other athletes of similar abilities within their respective age groups. Competitors will stay in their respective lanes for the 400 meter until they reach the 200 meters.  At this point, the athletes can break for the inside lane. A staggered start will be used for the 400 meters. It is highly likely that age groups will be combined for the 800-meter event. Athletes will use a waterfall start, and all are allowed to break for lane one once it is safe to do so.
